Meet Our Pastor

Pastor Norma Malfatti comes to us from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, having graduated in May, 2011.  During her time in seminary she served several congregations and faith-based agencies including First Lutheran Church in Lincoln, NE where she lived for a year, Lazarus Lutheran Church in Lineboro, MD and the ELCA Washington Office.

Prior to attending seminary Pr. Norma worked in government funded low-income housing for senior citizens and mobility impaired persons across the Metropolitan New York area, managing buildings in Queens, Brooklyn and Long Island, and connecting tenants with community services in upstate New York and Long Island. When asked why she left working to go to seminary she says that, "I always knew that I was called to be a pastor, ever since I was a little girl.  The time had finally come when God said, 'now is the time.'"

One of Pr. Norma's passion for ministry is advocacy ministry and she served internships at Bread for the World and two ELCA advocacy agencies.  She firmly believes that justice is not just about making sure that hungry people have food, the homeless have a place to stay and the naked are clothed but that the systemic injustices in the world that cause people to be hungry and in need are eradicated as well. In addition to advocacy and justice ministries, Pr. Norma loves to worship God and teach others about God's love and forgiveness available to all people.

In her downtime Pr. Norma is an avid reader and an even more enthusiastic NY Yankees fan.  She currently lives in the Downtown Binghamton with her mother, Betty, and her three cats, Alice, Emmett and George, who love to tell her that it's time to play fetch.

Administrative Assistant and Progressive Music Director, Lukus Wells

Lukus grew up in Barton NY, near Owego, and his musical talents emerged at an early age. He's a versatile musician with an enchanting voice; he plays a range of instruments, from piano and guitar to harp and Native American flute.

Lukus is in demand as a performer at such local venues as the Lost Dog Cafe and Merlin's. You can catch his appearance schedule on his Lukus Wells Web Site.

Lukus has brought a fresh and youthful perspective to our 11:15 worship service. That service, launched in 1992, was originally in the "contemporary worship" style of the 1990s: heavy on "praise songs" and light on elements like communion. But with guidance from Lukus, the service has become far richer and deeper, evolving into a style we call "Progressive Worship" or "Post-contemporary Worship." It combines secular songs and modern worship music with traditional elements, some dating back to the Middle Ages. It's a service you need to experience!

Nursery Supervisor

Nursery Supervisor: Jane Davis

Our church's ministry to children begins with our Nursery, which welcomes children from birth through kindergarten age during our Sunday morning worship services.  A paid Nursery Supervisor presides over a Nursery designed to communicate the love of Jesus to even the smallest child. The Nursery is also a haven for children up to three years old during our Christian Education Hour, between the worship services.

Director of Youth Ministries, Angie Roux

Angie Roux, our part-time Director of Youth Ministries, grew up in Watertown NY and lived for several years in New England, where she met her husband, Ray.   After moving to Binghamton in 1994, Angie earned a BA and MA in Sociology from Binghamton University and also taught courses there. She and Ray became part of the CTK fellowship in the fall of 2002 when their son Logan was almost 2.

Angie is a fiber artist who enjoys quilting, hand-dyeing fabric, attending quilt retreats with friends, and spending time in her studio. She has donated many Fundraiser quilts over the years and has done projects for her son's school and Lourdes Hospital.

Being involved and volunteering are very important to Angie. She has participated in, and highly recommends, Alpha, the Marriage Course, and Gifts Discovery. Opportunities to work with CTK youth began when she joined the team of Jr. High Sunday School teachers in 2007.  She never anticipated taking a full-time youth ministry position, but looking back, Angie sees that each youth activity that first year was one more step in a plan that God was laying out for her.

What does Angie like best about Christ the King?  "The welcoming nature of our fellowship and the importance we place on doing service for each other, within our community, and beyond our national borders. Service has kept me connected to my church family and provided multiple opportunities to show Christ's love to others, and thus receive it back."

Director of Children's Ministries, Karen Bernardo

In February 2011, Karen Bernardo became the Director of Children’s Ministries at Christ the King. At this moment, she’s also the Director of the Coburn Free Library in Owego, although she plans to retire from that position in June 2011. In addition, she’s a freelance writer and editor with a degree in Literature and Creative Writing from Binghamton University and a list of published poems, stories, and articles. Born in Endicott but raised in Yorktown Heights, NY, Karen is married to David Bernardo, with whom she joined Christ the King in 2004. She has two grown children, James Raab (married to Samantha) and Julie Hrobak (married to Joe). She’s also the happy grandma of Jimmy and Sarah Raab, as well as two cats, Pounce and Simba. Karen freely admits that part of her has never grown up, and loves to cut, color, glue, paint, stamp, fold, and craft. But she takes very seriously her commission to make God a real presence in the lives of Christ the King's children, and to help them build a faith they can carry into the world in which they live.

9:00 Music Director, Jim Ford

Prior to coming to CTK in July 2000, Jim was an organist at a Presbyterian church and a United Methodist church (both in Binghamton), and he taught English to adults from all over the world in a program run by the Binghamton City School District. He has written original music for theatrical productions at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and at Angelo State University, San Angelo, TX. He is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP).

Jim's wife Colleen teaches social studies at Binghamton High School, and their son Mike is a physical education teacher and coach in the Susquehanna Valley School District. Jim is thrilled to work at Christ The King with people he respects and enjoys, and is especially grateful for the abundance of musical talent found here!
